Issue: Surface bubbles, such as bubbles, streaks, or roughness.

  • Contamination in the rubber compound (out side particles).

  • Wrong temperature settings in machine.

  • Inadequate die maintenance.

    Solutions:

  • Ensure the rubber compound is clean and free of contaminants.

  • Verify and adjust temperature settings according to specifications.

  • Regularly clean and maintain the die to ensure smooth flow.

2. Dimensional Variations

Issue: Variability in the thickness, inner diameter or width of the extruded product.

  • Variation in rubber compound viscosity.

  • Poor die alignment or design.

  • Fluctuations in extrusion speed or pressure.

    Solutions:

  • Ensure the rubber compound is uniformly mixed and has consistent viscosity (MDR Checking).

  • Check and calibrate die alignment and design of tool.

  • Maintain consistent extrusion pressure and adjust settings as necessary.

3. Cure or Crosslinking Issues

Issue: Inadequate or excessive curing leading to poor mechanical properties.

Causes:

  • Incorrect cure time or temperature.

  • Uneven heating.

  • Incorrect dosage of curing agents or accelerator's.

    Solutions:

  • Verify and adjust cure time and temperature according to the rubber formulation.

  • Ensure even heating across the entire extrusion length.

4. Flow Marks

Issue: Marks or lines along the surface of the extruded rubber product.

Causes:

  • Inadequate die design or maintenance.

  • Uneven temperature distribution.

    Solutions:

  • Inspect and correct die design or replace worn components.

  • Ensure uniform temperature distribution in the extrusion system.

5. Die Swell

Issue: The extrudate expands after leaving the die, affecting dimensions.

  • High extrusion temperature.

  • Inconsistent compound viscosity.

    Solutions:

  • Adjust extrusion temperature to optimal levels.

  • Ensure consistent compound viscosity by proper mixing and blending.

6. Spiderwebbing

8. Brittleness or Weakness

  • Inadequate cooling.

  • Adjust cure parameters and review the formulation for proper balance of ingredients.

  • Ensure adequate and consistent cooling throughout the extrusion process.

9. Blockages or Jams

Issue: Material blockages or jams in the extruder.

  • Foreign materials or debris in the extruder.

  • Improperly mixed compound.

    Solutions:

  • Regularly inspect and clean the extruder to remove debris.

  • Ensure proper mixing and preparation of the rubber compound.

10. Inconsistent Extrusion Speed

  • Mechanical issues with the extrusion machinery.
